A meeting of Chief District Officers of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur held on Sunday further relaxed the lockdown, officially the prohibitory order, imposed to control the coronavirus spread in the city.

A meeting of Chief District Officers (CDOs) of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur Sunday has done away with the odd-even rule in the prohibitory order to come into effect from Tuesday. The prohibitory order has been extended until July 15. The odd-even rule applicable to private and public vehicles in Kathmandu Valley has been removed. Assistant Chief District Officer Umakanta Adhikari on Sunday said now all vehicles can ply the roads by following and maintain Covid-19 safety measures. he new order will come into effect on Tuesday until July 15.

The officials had allowed private vehicles to operate on an odd-even basis since June 22 and public vehicles with more than 25 seats since June 29. Likewise, public vehicles such as three-wheeler rickshaws, and vehicles with less than 25 seats can also operate and transportation of construction material can be operate from 10 pm to 5 am. However, microbuses are not allowed to carry more than 9 passengers.

Moreover, the CDOs have allowed to run examinations that were previously scheduled; an examination hall though should not accommodate more than 25 exam-appearing students.

Initially imposed for one week since April 29, the lockdown was extended until May 12 and then until May 27 earlier. On May 25, the authorities even decided to shut grocery shops and imposed other additional restrictions to come into effect from May 28 to June 3. However, it was widely criticized, and the officials had decided to let the groceries reopen from June 4 when they extended the lockdown to be in effect until June 14. The CDOs again extended it for one week for the period until June 21. By then, the number of cases had come down, and the officials had introduced gradual relaxations such as odd-even rationing on the operation of vehicles and small businesses.
